Introduction to Kindergarten

Welcome

I would like to welcome you and your child to my class.  I am very excited about this year and look forward to a great learning experience.  Please, feel free to ask me any questions.  I value parent opinions and feedback, because you know your child best.  We will be learning so much this year; and I think you will be amazed at your child's accomplishments.  Looking forward to knowing you better!

ME BOX Project

I am asking each student to complete a ‘Me’ project.  Please, help your child to find 3 small items that tell something about them.  It may be a picture, small toy, or some other favorite thing.  All items should fit within a shoe box or paper lunch bag.  The second week of school, I will be asking a few students each day to talk about their items so that we can get to know each other better.  I will also complete this project and share about myself with the class.  All items will be returned by Friday.

Here is an example using my son’s likes: photo (child shares about family), small Shrek toy (favorite movie), and elbow noodle (favorite food: mac-n-cheese).

S.U.R.F. Notebook

Each student has a S.U.R.F. notebook (Student's Useful Resource for Families).  This notebook will go back and forth from school to home each day.  The notebook is  divided into several sections, including behavior and information calendar, money and notes pocket, important papers, parent/teacher communication, and sight word lists.  Please, look over all the paper each night and initial your child's behavior calendar.  Any papers that needed information from you or your signature should be return as soon as possible.

There is a sample behavior calendar below.

Parent/Teacher Communication

I believe that communication is the key to building a successful parent-teacher relationship.  Throughout the year, I will communicate with you primarily using the  S.U.R.F. notebook, but as needed, I will phone, email, or set up a conference.  I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
